Rhinestones – Antique & Vintage Jewelry

Recorded evidence shows that rhinestones have been used in Jewelry since the 1600’s. Many of the “found” examples of this jewelry was made in Germany and France, which is not unusual since iris quartz, one of the varieties of quartz used to make rhinestones come from the Alps.  As a matter of fact, the name “rhinestone” is derived because these stones where brought down off the mountain by rivers such as the Rhine.  What makes a rhinestone so iridescent and shiny?  Internally, the rhinestone is made of many fractures and breaks.
